machine-driven (2019)
machine-driven was a quick little piece I wrote for my colleague and friend in DuoMotive, Michelle Li. We were on a tour that summer across different states, and I wanted to highlight my work, as a main focus of us as an ensemble is new works for flute and piano.
The piece is modeled on one idea: perpetual motion, with sixteenths abounding in both parts for duration of the piece, favoring a more mechanical approach to articulation. However, this contrasted by more legato flourishes of this same perpetual motion, and these episodes continually switch back and forth.
machine-driven was premiered at the Wesley UMC in Morgantown, WV on July 3rd, 2019.
